Delivering Smiles, One Mailbox at a Time: Friendship's Partnership with Kids Square

July 20, 2026

A handmade card may only take a few minutes to create, but for someone who receives it, the impact can last much longer.

That's the heart behind Friendship's partnership with Kids Square Children's Museum. Throughout the year, children and families who visit the museum create artwork, cards, and thoughtful messages for our residents, placing them in the Friendship mailbox at the museum. Those colorful expressions of kindness are delivered each quarter to one of our health and rehabilitation communities, reminding residents that they remain an important part of the community they helped build.

Over the past year, residents at Friendship Health & Rehab North received cheerful winter holiday greetings, residents at Friendship Richfield Health Center were surprised with handmade Valentine's cards and sweet treats, and most recently, residents at Friendship Health & Rehab South enjoyed colorful summer flower crafts accompanied by thoughtful goodies.

While each card is unique, they all deliver the same message: You matter.

For many of our residents, these unexpected gifts brighten an ordinary day and spark conversations, smiles, and treasured memories. A handmade card from a child often becomes much more than paper and glue—it becomes a keepsake that reminds someone they are seen, appreciated, and connected to the community around them.

Just as important, this partnership creates meaningful opportunities for children and families to experience the joy of giving. Through a simple act of creativity and kindness, young people learn that they have the power to make someone else's day a little brighter. It's a lesson in compassion that extends well beyond the walls of a museum.

At Friendship, we believe communities are strongest when generations connect. Partnerships like this help bridge age differences, encourage empathy, and remind us that meaningful relationships don't require years of knowing one another—sometimes they begin with a single handmade card.

Supporting organizations like Kids Square is a natural extension of Friendship's mission to Support Friends by Providing Peace of Mind. As a nonprofit organization, we're proud to invest in community partners that enrich the lives of local families while creating opportunities for our residents to remain connected to the people and places that make the Roanoke Valley special.

Whether it's through a colorful flower craft, a Valentine's message, or a holiday greeting tucked into our Friendship mailbox, every creation carries something far greater than paper and paint—it carries kindness.

And that's a delivery worth celebrating.
