A Checklist to Help Choose between Home and Independent Living

If you find it hard to imagine anyone actually choosing to leave home in retirement then chances are you aren’t fully aware of the benefits of independent living. This type of senior living is specifically designed for retirees who want an active, social and worry-free lifestyle. That said, it’s not always right for everyone. Here’s how to determine whether home or independent living is the best fit for you.

Happiness at Home

Well, we certainly don’t have to do a lot of convincing here. The main benefit is that it’s home, right? You’ve raised a family there, built a lifetime of memories and it’s where you feel most comfortable. We get it! But, ask yourself these questions to see if you’re really as satisfied as you could be:

-Are you tired of cleaning, cooking, home maintenance and yard work?

-Do you get around easily by yourself?

-Can you manage your own medications and personal care?

-Do you have as many active friendships as you’d like?

-Would you like to find a new hobby or try something new?

-Would you like to have more purpose in life?

-Is it becoming harder to fill your calendar with fun, engaging activities?

If you’ve answered ‘yes’ to more than one of these questions, then independent living might offer more opportunities to thrive in retirement than you would have at home.

The Benefits of Independent Living

The communities are considered a lifestyle choice for seniors who don’t need daily assistance, but want to enjoy retirement with benefits that include:

Resort-like setting – Communities feature beautifully landscaped grounds as well as amenities such as a pool, fitness center, onsite beauty salon and restaurant-style dining. Our restaurant will even deliver meals right to your door!

Choice of accommodations – Independent living communities offer a wide range of accommodations. For example, our 2-bedroom apartments are not only spacious, but they also feature a sunroom, balcony or terrace and you have 26 different floor plans from which to choose.

Worry-free living – You’ll finally have the time to do what you want, when you want as independent living communities take care of home upkeep, yard maintenance and housekeeping for you. Plus, we also offer a laundry service as well as transportation.

Opportunities to connect – The independent living lifestyle is active and fun! We offer a full calendar of social events, outings, classes and other enrichment opportunities to enjoy.

Convenience – Independent living communities like ours are located in the center of it all which means you’re just minutes from all the shopping, dining and entertainment options in Roanoke Valley.

Peace of Mind – Should your health needs evolve, independent living communities typically have additional levels of care on the same campus so you can remain in familiar surroundings and maintain continuity of care. Our community also features award-winning therapy services and an onsite pharmacy that delivers too.

When Independent Living Isn’t a Fit

Keep in mind that onsite medical care is typically not offered in independent living communities. So, if you need assistance with daily activities such as medication, bathing, dressing or eating, have cognitive challenges and/or chronic health conditions that require ongoing care this may not be the best fit.

Unless you’re in one of our communities! We also offer home care services as well so you have the option to remain in independent living as long as possible. As part of the additional levels of care on our campus we also offer rehabilitation and therapy after surgery, illness or injury.
