Officer J. A. Johnson from the Roanoke City Police Department to present the Cyber Security and Scam Protection program.
ROANOKE, Va. (October 19, 2017) – According to the Division of Consumer Affairs, one in five Americans over age 65 are victims of financial fraud through internet, phone, and mail – costing more than $2.6 billion per year. With so much at risk, Friendship is proud to present Officer J. A. Johnson, Crime Prevention Specialist, from the Roanoke City Police Department as he demonstrates the importance of having a secure digital presence and how to protect oneself from online scams. Free to attend and open to the public, the program will be held on Tuesday, October 24 at 7:00 p.m. at The Feinour Center – Adult Medical Day Care, located at 324 Hershberger Road in Roanoke.
At the presentation, Officer Johnson will identify a number of important steps that need to be taken to aid an investigation and, most importantly, to avoid further victimization in an identity theft problem. The focus will be on what to do to prevent cyber-attacks or scams and what to do if you find yourself a victim of such an attack. Attendees will learn the best practices for defending their online security, how to properly contact authorities if they become a victim, and how to warn others.
“The Virginia State Police Department constantly responds to a lot of calls, most of them are related to online scams and calls that people receive,” explains Officer Johnson. “If you can prevent a cyber attack, that’s going to save you from being a victim and having you interact with law enforcement”.
Participation is limited to 50 people and RSVP’s are now being accepted. To learn more information about the program, or to RSVP, call (540) 283-4433.
