Friendship Retirement Community to host FriendshipFest October 29

Friendship Retirement Community is hosting FriendshipFest, a day-long celebration of senior living on Oct. 29 that includes food and music, Halloween activities for children and tours of four revitalized spaces that enhance the quality of life for the Roanoke Valley's Greatest Generation.

The free event, open to the public, marks the grand opening of a new Wandering Garden, featuring peaceful pathways and outdoor meeting spaces amid seasonal flowers and plants; a renovated lobby for the Health and Rehab Center, with concierge services for visitors and families and a warm and inviting place for residents to socialize with a piano and fireplace; upgraded dining at Eastwood Assisted Living, with an elegant restaurant with cathedral ceilings ; and a new Residents' Center with a cozy new bar and bistro and a virtual golf room.

FriendshipFest will be held from 10 a.m.- 3 p.m. at locations throughout the campus along Hershberger Road. Visitors are encouraged to start their day at the welcome tent at 397 Hershberger Road to register for door prizes.

FriendshipFest attractions include:

• Free health screenings for blood glucose, blood pressure and depression.

• Free drop-off of unused pharmaceuticals, collected by the Roanoke County Sheriff's Office.

• Ribbon-cuttings and tours of the four renovated facilities.

• Food stations at three locations throughout campus.

• Free musical performances by James Pace (Health Center lobby), a jazz duo (Wandering Garden), flutist and violinist from Roanoke Symphony Orchestra (Residents' Center) and Friendship Singers (Eastwood Assisted Living).

• Halloween-themed activities for children, including pumpkin decorating and costume contest, petting zoo, hay rides, inflatables and other goodies.

• Wii tournament for grandparents and grandchildren.

• Virtual golf tournament; door prizes and much more.
