Over the weekend, Friendship Retirement Community supported the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life. This is a cause Friendship supports every year and this year was just as remarkable. The Friendship relay team raised more than $6,200 in addition to the $2,500 corporate donation Friendship gave for the event. Over 50 employees from Friendship gathered at the Reserve Avenue Athletic Fields on Friday June 4 for the event. Phabeanna Lawson, a member of the Friendship team, says it is always a fulfilling experience. "I am personally grateful to Friendship for giving its employees a chance to do this. My mom is a cancer and stroke survivor twice over. I get to see my mom another day because of cancer research," says Lawson.
The American Cancer Society Relay for Life is a life-changing event that gives everyone in communities across the globe a chance to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against the disease. At Relay, teams of people camp out at a local high school, park, or fairground and take turns walking or running around a track or path. Each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the event. Because cancer never sleeps, Relays are overnight events up to 24 hours in length.
